The grid wasn’t built for what’s coming
How Community Energy Works
Most of New Zealand’s energy system was built around large, centralised generation that fed power over long distances. It worked when demand was predictable and growth was steady.
That’s no longer the case. Demand is rising, pressure on the grid is increasing, and expanding infrastructure is slow, expensive and often reactive. We’re trying to solve a modern problem with an old model.A more effective approach is to build capacity where energy is actually used. Generate it locally. Store it when it’s abundant. Use it when it’s needed. That’s what a SUPA Hub does. It turns existing buildings into part of the solution.
WHAT'S UNDER THE HOOD

HOW IT WORKS & why it matters

The current national grid system is expensive to expand and not built for the level of flexibility New Zealand needs now. SUPA is building a decentralised energy network and together we respond to real-time demand, sharing the financial benefits locally.

By generating energy closer to where it’s used and storing it when there’s excess supply, we reduce pressure on the grid and smooth out some of the market's volatility.
Solar generates during the day
Batteries store energy when the supply is high
SUPA software manages when energy is used, stored or supplied
Profits are shared across our hub community

How the money works
Your infrastructure should be an investment, not just an expense.
How Community Energy Works
We structure the project with you so that the solar and battery system is funded through a loan, and you own the asset from day one.The key difference lies in how the loan is serviced.
1
Guaranteed Revenue
SUPA guarantees the revenue generated by your hub will cover the repayments. The system is designed to pay for itself, without requiring upfront capital or exposing you to market volatility.
2
Full ownership
You have full ownership from day one and over time, the loan is cleared, and the asset remains. At that point, the revenue it generates becomes ongoing income tied to the infrastructure you own on your site.
3
PREDICTABLE RETURNS
This isn’t a cost-saving exercise dressed up as a project. It’s the creation of a long-term asset with predictable returns.
