Asking the government to rethink its plan to subsidise a new LNG import terminal

Recently, we joined a wide group of organisations in signing an open letter asking the government to rethink its plan to subsidise a new LNG import terminal.

LNG is liquefied natural gas shipped in from overseas. It is one of the most expensive fuels you can buy, and its price swings wildly with global market conditions.

The risk is simple. If we lock ourselves into imported LNG, power prices will go up. We lose control over our own energy future and end up tied to international gas prices at a time when people are already struggling with the cost of living. Even the companies that first considered building the terminal walked away because the numbers did not add up.

We signed this letter because there is a far better path for Kiwis. Solar, batteries and smarter local energy systems are already cutting costs for households, businesses, schools and communities. These solutions are proven, affordable, and ours to build. Every dollar invested in them strengthens our energy independence and keeps more money circulating here at home. At SUPA, we believe New Zealand can power itself with clean, local energy.

We have the people, the skills and the resources to do it. We do not need to pour public money into volatile fossil fuels from the other side of the world. We can grow our own energy and keep our communities in control.

We have the people, the skills and the resources to do it. We do not need to pour public money into volatile fossil fuels from the other side of the world.

We can grow our own energy and keep our communities in control. This open letter is one step in a much bigger fight for a fairer, more resilient energy system. We are proud to stand with others pushing for change. The solutions are here. The momentum is here.

Now we need the government to back the future that will actually lower power bills and strengthen Aotearoa for the long run!
